MSP calls for Permanent Support for "Pass Plus" Driving Programme
Road fatality stats stark reminder of need to improve safety
North East Labour MSP Richard Baker has urged the Executive to do more to increase take-up of the "Pass Plus" post-test driver scheme in the region.
Baker’s call comes as statistics released today (Tuesday) showed a ten per cent rise in fatalities on Scotland’s roads compared to last year.
The previous Labour-led Executive agreed to fund a six month pilot scheme in Grampian, aimed at increasing take up of Pass Plus. The programme, which can be taken after a driver passes their test, covers aspects not included in the main test such as driving in towns, on rural roads, at night and in all weathers. The pilot scheme saw the Executive agree to pay £75 per driver towards the cost of the training, on top of grants offered by the region’s local authorities.
Baker believes the new statistics show the need for the Executive to commit to providing a contribution towards the cost of Pass Plus on a permanent basis.

"One fatality on our roads is one too many and a ten per cent rise is deeply regrettable. We have to do absolutely everything we can to ensure drivers, especially new drivers, have the skills and experiences they need to drive more safely.
"There have been far, far too many accidents and fatalities on the North East’s roads. The previous Executive recognised this and agreed to contribute to the cost of drivers taking the Pass Plus scheme on a pilot basis. I would like to see this support made permanent so that every new driver in the region can take Pass Plus.
"Pass Plus gives drivers experience in driving on rural roads, at night and in all weathers. These are exactly the skills that could reduce the number of tragic road accidents in the North East.
"We need to increase awareness of Pass Plus, perhaps by taking it to schools and colleges, and I hope this is also something the Transport Minister will consider as a matter of urgency."
